Beautiful Boot, But Not For Me

I had been searching for a great knee-high boot for a long time. Apparently, a 14-1/8" calf is considered wider-than-average in the boot world. Every time I'd find a beautifully-crafted boot, I was unable to zip it. (Or, I'd zip them up by force and my calves looked like stuffed sausages). I even went as far as to get a couple of boots altered, but the addition of large V-shaped gussets ruined the lines of the boots.

Thankfully, this season, most of the boots have been made a little wider to wear over skinny jeans. "Knee-high" seems to be a relative term, though. Although in photos, most boots look pretty tall, most have been 3"-4" below my knees. I am 5'-4". Since my legs are fairly short, I need the boots to be fitted and right below where the back of my knee bends/right under the kneecap in order to create an illusion of length.

At 16.5" shaft length, the Seychelles Slap on the Wrist boot in black came closest to what I was looking for. Amazon was having a great deal on my size and they offered free return shipping! I was so excited to find the package waiting for me on the front steps.

The boots come in a cool, black slide-out box. Soft and supple real leather -closer to nubuck leather than shiny-smooth leather. The 15" boot opening was ample enough to accomodate regular fitted jeans comfortably. I have a developing bunion on my right foot and was worried the boot was going to be too narrow, but it fit well. The 7.5 is true to size and may be too loose for someone with really narrow feet.

I then tried on the left boot. It was significantly larger, almost loose. I thought it was a defect in the manufacturing process. I measured my left calf, and lo and behold, it was 13-7/8". Who knew a 1/4" difference could be so significant! The stitching was chaffing my outside left ankle bone. I was wearing nylons at the time. It was better with thicker socks. The boot shaft came up to about 2-1/2" below my knees. Still, not a deal-breaker.

After trying on both boots in front of a full-length mirror, I was devastated to see how much the boots slouched around the ankles. My ankles are 8" around. They looked horrible. Looks like Zappos.com is no longer carrying the boots, but I checked out their video review of the Seychelles Slap on the Wrist after I placed my order through Amazon. You can clearly see the slouching on the model, but mine was about 50% worse. I watched other videos of similar boots and all of them sort of slouch. Maybe this is the nature of these types of riding boots? Needless to say, the boots were sadly returned.

The only boot I've tried on this season so far without this issue is the Coconuts Blakely riding boot selling for $149.95 at DSW. In this boot, the ankle is clearly tapered in. The reasons I didn't buy this boot is that the foot is too narrow, the shaft is too short, I didn't like the styling of the back of the shaft, and the heel is too flat. I know I sound pretty darn critical, but boots are a luxury item for me. So, if I'm going to dish out close to $200 for boots, I expect good fit, proportions, and aesthetics.

After I returned the Seychelles boots, I ordered the Blondo Women's Vallera Knee-High Boot in black through Amazon. Pretty plain-looking, but it has a 17" shaft, and one of the reviewers mentioned a narrow ankle. If this one doesn't work, I think I'll give up. ~Sigh~

Stylish riding boots

Lightening my hair color meant this winter I'll be needing some non-black boots :) I didn't want the usual dark brown, so I searched for cognac/spice/etc color boots. The color looks great in person, and I trust the Seychelles brand, so I'm happy with my purchase. I like the short heel, as my feet don't like to go flat but I'll be walking a lot, so can't be too high.
My usual size is 7.5, but these are a bit too loose. However, I tried the 7s and those were just too tight, and I had tight boots before that never loosened up enough even after cobbler treatment, so I learnt my lesson. I kept the 7.5 and added a foam insert to make it work. It's not necessary for sole comfort, I just needed it to fit better.
I have small calves, so these are a tiny bit loose around, but only about half an inch. I can always just add a pair of knee-high socks, but as I'll be likely wearing them over leggings or skinny jeans, the shaft width works for me. They are not too wide to look funny under bootcut or straight leg jeans either. If you have athletic calves, these may not work for you, although there is a bit of a built-in stretch. Amazon has a good return policy (which is why I was able to order two sizes to compare), so give it a try!

Well made, comfortable, adorable, great color (whiskey). I am in love with these boots. I am going to guess if you're between sizes go down. I got a 7 and they are perfect w a little room. I have 14" calves and these fit great. LOVE. Now I wish I could get in black too!!
